You have just left the interview for the job of your dreams and you feel really good about the opportunity. You’re thinking to yourself, “I bet they will call me any day with an offer!” It’s great that you feel like you nailed it! So what’s your next move? Do you wait to hear back from the potential employer? Or do you send a Thank You? The answer is simple- yes, you need to thank the employer.
What’s the best method of delivery?
Many people regularly ask me, ”What is the best way to thank a hiring manager(s). Should I send an email, go analog and send out some snail mail, pick up the phone and call direct, shoot them a text or even send a message via Linkedin? Most Hiring Managers and Recruiters will tell you that the preferred method is email-it’s fast and it doesn’t interfere with their busy days. Some recruiters like Linkedin as well, but they may not check their account every day, so again emailing is the preferred method.
How long should I wait before hitting Send?
As a Recruiter with many years of experience and a network of many fellow Recruiters, we all agree that the answer is the sooner, the better. When you get home from your rock star interview you should thank the team right away! This shows you take charge and don’t procrastinate-If you don’t have time that day try and send it within 24 hours.

Michelle , do I need to email each interviewer or can I just send one to the whole interview panel? You should thank each interviewer individually and try and recall something that each interviewer said. Doing this helps to eliminate the “form thank you” feel that too often happens.. Thank them for their time, express your interest in the role and why you’re the best candidate, along with anything special that you will bring to the table. Close this rock-star thank you by letting them know you’re looking forward to the next steps in the process and your desire to be part of their team.

I thought I nailed this interview AND I sent a thank you, so why haven’t they called??? What should be your next move? I would send a follow up email and reiterate your interest, asking specifically about next steps…some might prefer to make a phone call to the Hiring Manager-this is up to you, however I will caution you to only call once and not be too pushy as this can make them annoyed. There is some truth to the old adage that the squeaky wheel gets the oil, however sometimes the squeaky wheel is just replaced with a new wheel. I have seen candidates moved out of consideration for calling multiple times a day and you don’t want to be the person who is being screened out.
I was a shoe-in, so what happened?
“We went with another candidate” I know those words are hard to hear, but remain positive and thank them for letting you know and if anything changes you are still very interested in the company.
I have seen time and time again candidates who were turned down and only to be hired for something else within the organization or the original person offered the position declined, re-opening your opportunity. So accept bad news graciously, because you never know what the future may hold.
