ResumeEdge Explains Why a Professionally Written Resume Is a Must

Creating a Resume by Yourself Can Be Ineffective

LINCOLN, Neb., May, 2013—Most employees have written a resume at least once in their career. As little as 15 years ago, resumes were simply documents that recorded an individual’s professional and academic history. The prevailing wisdom at that time was to begin a resume with an objective statement in which a candidate explained what job was being sought or what the individual expected in terms of employment.

Times have changed. The economy has changed. Now, the number of candidates far exceeds the number of available positions. According to an April 2013 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 11.7 million unemployed workers reside in the United States. In March 2013, only 88,000 new jobs were created. There is a wide disconnect between what the American work force needs and what is readily available.

“Given the poor job outlook, this is not the time to believe a resume is nothing more than a listing of a candidate’s background,” said Darlene Zambruski, ResumeEdge managing editor. “Modern resumes are marketing tools that convince a hiring manager or a recruiter that the individual is the perfect candidate for the position.”

How does a resume market a candidate?

According to ResumeEdge, hiring managers and recruiters want to see the following information in the document:

  1. A strong opening summary rather than an objective. The summary should paint the candidate as the ideal person for the specific job opening. Resumes are no longer ”one-size-fits-all.’ They must be tailored to each position. The summary will dovetail a candidate’s skills/knowledge/abilities to the position’s responsibilities. In other words, it tells a hiring manager how the individual can positively impact the company’s bottom line.
  2. Quantified accomplishments. These prove that the candidate has performed well in the past. Hiring managers are interested in staff that can boost revenue or reduce expenses. By adding dollar figures of money saved or earned and percentages of improvement, a candidate proves the ability to do the job.
  3. Responsibilities that are presented with the accompanying results of the candidate’s efforts. If a task has no results, it has no value to a hiring manager. Again, candidates need to prove they can help a company succeed.

Professional resume writers are trained to market a candidate’s background to make them stand out to hiring managers and recruiters.

Ms. Zambruski adds, “Just because someone knows how to drive a car doesn’t mean that same individual is skilled in repairing the motor if there’s a problem. The same holds true for writing a resume. Even if we’ve had experience writing papers in school and perhaps at work, resume writing has evolved over the years. It is now a skill-based profession, requiring certification, where solid marketing and industry knowledge showcase an individual’s strengths while also minimizing any weaknesses.”

Having a professional who knows what hiring managers and recruiters want will help an individual’s resume get noticed even if dozens, or hundreds, of equally-qualified candidates are vying for the same position.
