Keyword Tips for a Better Resume

For the uninitiated, keywords are noun phrases that employment scanning software picks up on when a computer, rather than an individual, screens a resume initially. With so many applicants applying for the same position, HR staff are inundated and rely upon computers to eliminate job seekers who don’t match much of the position’s criteria.

To Get Noticed, You Must Pass the Initial Screen

To do that, you need to use appropriate keywords.

An example of keywords for accountants would be:

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
  • tax audits
  • IRS investigations
  • P&L (Profit and Loss)

For someone in marketing, these would be good keyword choices:

  • product launches
  • brand equity
  • negotiations
  • B2B (Business to Business)
  • focus groups
